All over the world, major cities look for sustainable solutions to cool down their heat islands. With moderate success. And despite the fact that there are already numerous very good ideas, innovations and strategies. In collaboration with experts all over the world and an exclusive selection of companies in the field of Green Infrastructure, the Beat the Heat Initiative brings together online the crucial expert knowledge on sustainable cooling of our cities, presents the latest projects and products and summarizes what city decision-makers today need to know now to ensure a livable metropolis of tomorrow. Together, we can take action to cool our cities and create more livable, sustainable urban environments for all.

The UHIE – far from unstoppable

The Urban Heat Island Effect refers to the phenomenon where urban areas experience higher temperatures than surrounding rural areas due to human activities such as buildings, roads, and transportaions, which absorb and trap heat. 60,000 – according to the WHO, this was the number of heat-rleated deaths in Europe in 2022 alone. The Urban Heat Island Effect causes temperatures in metropolitan areas to rise to extreme levels. Not only does this heat have a negative impact on the well-being and health of city dwellers, it also effects energy consumption and air and water quality. It is one of the biggest challenges that cities all over the world face today. If not the biggest. But the Urban Heat Island Effect is far from unstoppable. And this is why the two urban planning magazine brands G+L and toposmagazine team up to form the Beat the Heat Initiative.

Beat the Heat Initiative mission: Enhance urban quality of life

In collaboration with international experts from the private sector, science and city administration, the mission of the Beat the Heat Initiative is to raise awareness about the Urban Heat Island Effect and empower individuals, business, and communities to take effective steps to mitigate its impacts. By implementing simple yet effective strategies, we can reduce heat buildup, conserve energy, improve air quality, and enhance the overall quality of life in our cities.
