Limited domestic wood, high demand, high prices—these are factors clearly impacting the timber industry. Nordbahn gGmbH has taken this to heart and sought a solution, which it found in NOBA-Laminated Wood®. Read on to learn what this product is all about and what advantages it offers.
The Trend Toward Locality
The era in which wood from around the world was taken for granted is drawing to a close. Cities and planning offices are seeking alternatives: shorter transport routes, regional sources, and traceable supply chains. Yet even so, sourcing local larch or Douglas fir is no longer as easy as it was ten years ago.
The issue is not quantity, but quality. High-grade logs are becoming scarce—and expensive. Those still committed to using solid wood face a dilemma: either accept offcuts and waste or resort to tropical or chemically treated woods. Neither option aligns with a “sustainable mindset.”
A Different Approach: NOBA-Laminated Wood®
Nordbahn gGmbH tackled the issue from a unique angle: not faster or sleeker, but more regional and thoughtful.
The product is called NOBA-Laminated Wood®, made from many short wood lamellae that are expertly finger-jointed and glued. Short pieces of wood, connected with finger joints and processed in two layers. Made from local Douglas fir and larch, carefully selected and inspected. The principle: rather than using a few perfect boards, combine many good pieces intelligently. Energy usage remains low, transport routes short. This ensures a resource-conscious approach. What matters is not the prestige of the grain but performance in daily life—outdoors, in wind and weather.
The Field Test: 50 Benches, Full Risk
To ensure that theory matched practice, Nordbahn launched a project: 50 benches were outfitted with NOBA-Laminated Wood slats and distributed to municipalities, planning offices, and parks departments—as test objects, not showpieces.
The conditions were clear: outdoor use, no special treatment, feedback encouraged. The response? Overwhelmingly positive. Even experts who were initially skeptical became convinced—by the material, the concept, and the commitment.
The Institute for Wood Technology Dresden confirmed: the workmanship, the bonding, the durability—all were within the green zone. Especially the narrower cross-sections of the bench slats showed surprisingly strong performance in tests.
A Material with Integrity
The lifespan is within a solid range, the production is well-thought-out, and the origin is transparent. No chemical cocktails, no container shipping—instead: a regional material with identity. With NOBA-Laminated Wood®, Nordbahn gGmbH offers not only a new product but also a design philosophy. One that values proximity, traceability, and social responsibility.
