With the motto ‚A Park for Everyone, Built by Everyone‘, Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh, North Carolina, is set to open in June 2025, showcasing a playground that embodies inclusion and sustainable urban planning. Richter Spielgeräte GmbH has played a significant part in this, creating a central meeting place for exercise and relaxation with its innovative, barrier-free play areas.
A place of play has emerged from a dark history
Dorothea Dix Park has had an eventful past, evolving from Spring Hill Plantation to Dorothea Dix Hospital — North Carolina’s first psychiatric clinic — and finally becoming a public park. The area, which was once characterised by questionable practices, is now home to a spacious playground that focuses on fun, activity and social interaction.
Richter Spielgeräte GmbH carefully planned the play areas, taking the park’s entire history into account. All age groups are catered for, and accessibility and inclusion are integral to the design. The result is a park that delights children and enables people with physical disabilities to experience movement and play in new ways.
The central elements: towers, suspension bridges and mega swings
At the heart of the playground stand three tall towers, which can be seen from far away. These towers are accessible via ramps, enabling wheelchair users, visitors with pushchairs, and those with walking aids to easily climb them.
The two-storey suspension bridges connecting the towers offer different levels of play.
- The lower level is suitable for younger children and visitors with limited mobility, offering them a new perspective on the world.
- The upper level is aimed at older children and teenagers, offering them the chance to combine skill with a sense of adventure.
Another highlight is the 30-metre-long ‚Mega Swing‘, which can accommodate several children and adults at the same time and offers spectacular views of the Raleigh skyline.

Historical references and an interactive game
The ‘Clapper Mill’ area was inspired by the proximity to former industrial facilities. An old mill house was used as a model, complete with a visible shaft and moving belts. Children can experience the mechanics interactively, bringing historical elements to life in a playful way.
The playground also features sensory and water play elements.
- The infinity mirror creates fascinating visual effects.
- The sand and water play area encourages creative play for younger children.
All of these features were designed and manufactured by Richter Spielgeräte, who focus on inclusion, safety, and providing a high level of play value.

Beat the Heat: Sustainability and Urban Cooling
The playground in Dorothea Dix Park is an example of sustainable and climate-resilient urban planning, and is part of the international Beat the Heat initiative. Rising heat stress in cities poses health risks and increases energy consumption. The park actively contributes to cooling the urban space through green infrastructure, shade-providing structures and water-related play areas.
The Beat the Heat initiative combines expert knowledge, innovative projects and strategies to reduce the impact of urban heat islands. Dorothea Dix Park is a prime example of this, offering an inclusive, energy-efficient space that fosters community while enhancing the city’s resilience to climate change.
